  • Madonna’s Brother Dead at 63

    Madonna’s Brother Dead at 63

Madonna’s brother, Christopher Ciccone, died Friday at age 63. The fifth child of Madonna Louise and Silvio Patrick Ciccone, his famous sister was two years older than him, and the siblings worked together in New York City.

A dancer and choreographer, Ciccone “used his talents to support Madonna’s emerging career,” per the Hollywood Reporter, filling roles for his sister that included, at times, acting as her creative consultant, dresser, art director, music video director, show designer, and tour director. He was also one of her backup dancers, TMZ reports.

The two were later estranged for some time, however, after his 2008 tell-all, Life With My Sister Madonna, was released. However, in later years he told reporters they’d reconciled, and the Material Girl confirmed that in an Instagram tribute to her brother Sunday.

“He was the closest human to me for so long,” she writes. “Its [sic] hard to explain our bond But it grew out of an understanding that we were different and society was going to give us a hard time for not following the status quo. We took each other’s hands and we danced through the madness of our childhood In fact dance was a kind of superglue that held us together.”

Her lengthy tribute goes on to reminisce about their life together, including, “We defied the Roman Catholic Church, The Police, the Moral Majority and all Authority figures that got in the way of Artistic freedom!” She acknowledges that he sometimes used his “sharp tongue” against her, but says she always forgave him, and that they found their way back to each other. Ciccone, who later worked as an interior designer and had his own footwear line, died of cancer, leaving behind his husband, British actor Ray Thacker.

  • Kris Jenner Says to Get Married to Corey Gamble

Kris Jenner Says to Get Married to Corey Gamble

Kris Jenner might not be rushing to the altar with Corey Gamble, but she also isn’t ruling out marriage entirely!

During the July 11 episode of The Kardashians, Kris met up with her friends Faye Resnick and Kathy Hilton for a shopping trip in Beverly Hills, where she filled them in on her upcoming hysterectomy surgery.

After Kris, 68, explained the situation and grew emotional about losing her ovaries, Kathy admitted that she was not expecting to hear this particular news from her friend. “I thought you were gonna tell me you’re getting married!” she told Kris, who has been dating Corey since 2014.

Kris let out a laugh and clarified, “I mean, not right this very second!”

Kathy then joked, “I thought you were gonna say six in the morning [tomorrow]. I’m like, ‘That’s a little early for me to be…’”

“Dressed and ready to go as a bridesmaid,” Kris finished her sentence. “I mean, you guys can totally be bridesmaids when I get married. So maybe when I’m 70!”

Kris and Corey, 43, first connected in August 2014 while they were both in Ibiza to attend mutual friend and fashion designer Riccardo Tisci’s 40th birthday party. They began dating shortly after, and have been together ever since.

The two tend to keep their romance private, though they often attend red carpet events together, occasionally rave about each other on social media and even put out a holiday card together in 2022. Corey also appeared on episodes of Keeping Up with the Kardashians and now on The Kardashians.

  • U.S. govt transfers Mr Woodberry, Hushpuppi to low-security prison facility

U.S. govt transfers Mr Woodberry, Hushpuppi to low-security prison facility

Three notorious Nigerian internet fraudsters, known for their significant social media and political influence, are presently serving their sentences at the same prison facility in the United States. Bidemi Rufai is scheduled for release on Valentine’s Day in 2025.

Ray ‘Hushpuppi’ Abbas, 41, Jacob Olalekan Ponle, also known as Mr. Woodberry, 33, and Bidemi Rufai, 46, are all being held at Fort Dix, a low-security prison near Joint Base McGuire in Burlington County, New Jersey.

They are expected to serve the remainder of their sentences there. Mr. Rufai, a close ally of Governor Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State, was arrested in May 2021 at John F. Kennedy Airport while attempting to flee the U.S. to Nigeria on a Royal Dutch ticket.

FBI Special Agent Heidi Hawkins coordinated the arrest of Bidemi Rufai after uncovering a scheme in which Rufai stole the identities of thousands of U.S. citizens to claim COVID-19 benefits amounting to nearly half a million dollars. He used the stolen funds to purchase luxury cars and watches to support his extravagant lifestyle.

Rufai pleaded guilty to wire fraud and aggravated identity theft and was sentenced to five years in prison.

The U.S. government ordered him to pay $604,000 in restitution to the scam’s victims, primarily government institutions such as the Washington Employment Security Department ($350,763), Arkansas Division of Workforce Services ($10,166), Maine Department of Labor ($8,205), and Michigan Unemployment Insurance Agency ($44,216), among others.

Mr. Rufai, inmate number 83912-053, was transferred from a facility outside Seattle, Washington, to Fort Dix in Burlington County ahead of his scheduled release on Valentine’s Day in 2025.

His accomplice, Mr. Woodberry, was also moved from the notorious Danbury Correctional Center in Connecticut to Fort Dix. Mr. Woodberry, 33, with inmate number 54314-424, is set for release on October 17, 2027, after which he will be deported by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

Judge Robert Gettleman of the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois in Chicago sentenced Mr. Woodberry to eight years and three months in prison on one count of fraud in July 2023. His lighter sentence was the result of a plea bargain that dismissed seven other counts.

Mr. Woodberry, a socialite with over a million followers on his now-deactivated Instagram page, was arrested on June 10, 2020, alongside fellow fraudster Hushpuppi, at a Dubai apartment. The court ordered him to return $8 million to seven victims, and prosecutors recommended that he forfeit his diamond-studded necklace, rings, and all gold jewelry.

The last member of the triad, the notorious Hushpuppi, known for flaunting designer wear, luxury cars, and extravagant parties on Instagram, has also been transferred to the Fort Dix detention facility.

Hushpuppi, 41, with inmate number 54313-424, was moved from a facility outside Los Angeles to Fort Dix, where he is expected to serve the remainder of his sentence until August 6, 2029.

Arrested in June 2020 in Dubai and extradited to the U.S. to face internet scam charges, Hushpuppi was convicted and sentenced to 11 years in prison in 2022 by United States District Judge Otis D. Wright II.

It is unclear whether U.S. prison officials were aware that the Nigerian trio they transferred to the same facility were allies from Nigeria and Dubai. The U.S. Bureau of Prisons did not respond to requests for comments.

  • Netflix, Amazon target Asian market as Indian originals dominate streaming space

Netflix, Amazon target Asian market as Indian originals dominate streaming space

Netflix and Amazon are back on top as the leading streaming services giants. In the first quarter of 2024, both platforms have once again showcased dominance in original content commissioning in the OTT space. The two streaming services accounted for more than half (53 percent) of all global SVOD commissions in the first quarter, as reported by Ampere Analysis. However, it is the growing content in the Asian markets, particularly India which has targeted the focus towards Indian subscribers.

Surge in Indian OTT content in 2024

During the first quarter, both Netflix and Amazon commissioned more original content from outside the U.S. than from within the U.S, according to a report by The Hollywood Reporter. The report also stated that the number of original shows from Western Europe, led by the U.K., Spain, and Germany, was almost equal to the number from North America for Netflix. There was also an increase in titles from Asia Pacific. Amazon also increased its original content in Asia, especially in India, where it ordered a record 37 new titles, more than the total from the previous six quarters combined.

Shershaah, Sardar Udham boost Indian originals

According to the Ampere Analysis research, Amazon, which maintains a substantial lead over Netflix in India in terms of subscriber figures, recently unveiled its most extensive collection of original Indian movies to date. The platform is actively engaging in securing pay-one and co-financing arrangements with local theatrical distributors in the region.

The diverse array of Indian films set to debut on Prime Video includes the war film Shershaah, featuring Sidharth Malhotra and Kiara Advani; Sudha Kongara’s action drama Soorarai Pottru; and the historical drama Sardar Udham, starring Vicky Kaushal. The importance of the Indian market to Amazon’s international strategy was a significant factor in enlisting Indian superstar Priyanka Chopra alongside Richard Madden in its high-budget spy series Citadel.

Asian-Indian subscribers targeted by OTT giants

Ampere Analysis senior researcher Mariana Enriquez Denton Bustinza was quoted saying, “While Netflix is catering to a broad subscriber base while leaning on markets whose productions offer the greatest potential for crossover appeal,” Amazon’s approach “remains more heavily targeted towards key markets such as India, while it leverages its global position to expand further into the theatrical market to generate downstream revenues from its platforms.”

Mirzapur 3 is the new show slated to release on Amazon on July 5.
