  • France head coach outraged by Mbappe

France head coach outraged by Mbappe

Kylian Mbappe’s return to action earlier than expected has outraged France head coach Didier Deschamps and his coaching staff as the striker was left off the squad that will take part in the UEFA Nations League.

Mbappe was subbed off with an injury during Real Madrid’s win over Alaves and was expected to be out for three weeks but returned to action just nine days later against Lille in the UCL. He further went on to play 70 minutes against Villarreal on Saturday.

According to a report by Marca, Deschamps and his coaching staff are not happy with Mbappe, as the only reason he was rested was due to injury and have the feeling that the French captain ‘has erased himself from the national team.’

France had lost their last Nations League outing against Italy and currently sit in second place in Group 2. After a trip to Hungary, where they will face Iran, they will turn their attention to Belgium, who they will face on October 11.

Mbappe’s developments have seen him receive a lot of hate, which also includes some harsh words from former France and Manchester United captain Patrice Evra, who even criticised the decision to hand the 25-year-old the reins of the national team.

“You gave him the keys to PSG, you gave him the keys to the French national team , but Mbappé is still a young player. With all due respect to him, he has not yet reached Benzema’s level,” said Evra on RMC Sport show Rothen S’enflamme

“Of course I would have given the armband to Griezmann , without hesitation. I would never have given it to Mbappe. How do you want him to be motivated afterwards? If we give him everything, will you want to make the effort?” he further said.

  • Erdoğan holds bilateral talks at NATO summit in US

Erdoğan holds bilateral talks at NATO summit in US

The gathering kicked off with a ceremony commemorating the alliance’s 75th anniversary.

Following the opening event, Erdoğan met with Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban at his hotel.

The leaders discussed bilateral relations, Türkiye’s accession process to the European Union and various regional and global issues, according to Erdoğan’s office.

The president expressed his expectation for Hungary’s support in revitalizing his country’s long-stalled bid, especially since Hungary assumed the rotating presidency of the bloc earlier this month.

Erdoğan told Orban Türkiye’s ongoing efforts to resolve the war in Ukraine and address Israel’s attacks on Gaza. He called for increased international efforts to establish peace in these regions.

Relations between Türkiye and Hungary were elevated to a strategic partnership in 2013. Last December, the two countries celebrated the 100th anniversary of their diplomatic relations.

Erdoğan was set to participate in the leaders’ meeting of the 32-member alliance on July 10. Later in the day, U.S. President Joe Biden was scheduled to host a dinner at the White House for the leaders and their spouses.

Before the dinner, Erdoğan was expected to meet with Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis.

The meeting was anticipated to be routine and positive, reflecting the recent mending of ties between the neighboring countries, media reports said.

Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan and his Greek counterpart, Giorgos Gerapetritis, were also expected to attend.

The thaw between the neighbors was initiated during another meeting between Erdoğan and Mitsotakis at a NATO summit in July last year.

The leaders agreed to “open a new page” in bilateral relations, leading to reciprocal visits and the signing of several cooperation agreements.

The Washington summit will continue with a meeting focused on the war in Ukraine, with discussions expected to reassure Ukraine of NATO’s unwavering support amid the ongoing conflict.

Erdoğan is expected to hold further bilateral meetings during the event, with plans to discuss measures to halt Israeli attacks in Gaza and to promote temporary peace in the region, according to local media.

The president will conclude his visit with a press conference before departing Washington.

  • President Xi Jinping urges swift Ukraine resolution

President Xi Jinping urges swift Ukraine resolution

President Xi Jinping said on Monday that a political settlement of the Ukraine crisis and an early ceasefire are in the best interest of all parties, and urged the international community to create conditions for direct dialogue and negotiations between Russia and Ukraine.

Xi made the remarks during a meeting in Beijing with Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, who arrived in the Chinese capital on Monday morning. “Peace mission 3.0” is how Orban captioned a picture posted on social media platform X soon after his arrival in Beijing.

Orban’s visit to the Chinese capital comes on the heels of his trips last week to Moscow and Kyiv, where he proposed that Ukraine consider agreeing to an immediate cease-fire with Russia.

During the meeting in Beijing, the two leaders engaged in in-depth discussions on the Ukraine crisis. Orban briefed Xi about his recent visits to Russia and Ukraine. Xi commended him for his efforts to promote a political resolution of the Ukraine crisis and outlined China’s views and propositions on the matter.

Xi said that priority should be given to adhering to the “three principles of no spillover from the battlefield, no escalation of fighting and no adding fuel to the fire by relevant parties”, in order to quickly cool down the situation.

He underlined the need for the international community to provide assistance for direct dialogue and negotiations between Russia and Ukraine. Only when all major powers exert “positive rather than negative influence” can a ceasefire occur, he said.

Xi said that China has been actively facilitating peace talks in its own way, encouraging and supporting all efforts conducive to a peaceful resolution of the crisis. Noting that the basic principles and efforts of China and Hungary are aligned, he said that China is willing to continue its communication with Hungary and relevant parties.

On Wednesday, Xi reiterated China’s position on the Ukraine crisis during his meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Astana, Kazakhstan. He said that China is willing to continue making positive efforts to promote a political settlement of the crisis.

Following his meeting with Xi, Orban posted on X that China is a “key power” in creating the conditions for peace in the Russia-Ukraine conflict. “This is why I came to meet with President Xi in Beijing, just two months after his official visit to Budapest,” Orban wrote.

Hungary assumed the rotating presidency of the European Union at the start of July.

During his meeting with Orban on Monday, Xi expressed the hope that Hungary would play an active role in promoting the healthy and stable development of China-EU relations and in achieving positive interactions between them.

Xi also emphasized that there is no geopolitical wrangling or conflict of fundamental interests between China and the EU.

China-EU relations are of strategic significance and global influence and should be kept stable and healthy, he said, adding that both sides should work together to address global challenges.

He emphasized the need for both sides to uphold partnership, continue to promote two-way opening-up and strengthen international cooperation, in order to contribute to promoting global peace, stability, development and prosperity.

On bilateral relations, Xi said that China will further comprehensively deepen reform, promote high-quality development and advance high-level opening-up, which will provide new opportunities for and inject new impetus into China-Hungary cooperation.

He called for maintaining high-level exchanges between the two countries, deepening political mutual trust, and enhancing strategic communication and coordination.

Both countries should continue to firmly support each other, strengthen practical cooperation in various fields, and actively participate in the high-quality development of the Belt and Road Initiative, Xi said.

Recalling Xi’s state visit to Hungary in May, Orban said his country advocates strengthening cooperation with China, and opposes forming “small circles” and stoking bloc confrontation.

Hungary is willing to take the opportunity of its rotating presidency of the EU to actively promote the sound development of EU-China relations, he said.

Orban noted that China wants world peace and has put forward a series of important, constructive initiatives amid a turbulent international situation.

China has used practical actions to demonstrate its ability as an important stabilizer in promoting world peace, Orban said. Hungary highly appreciates and values China’s role and influence in global affairs, and is willing to closely maintain strategic communication and cooperation with China, he added.

  • France PM stays in power for now after shaky elections

France PM stays in power for now after shaky elections

France’s prime minister will temporarily stay in power as the country works out how to deal with the surprise outcome of a snap parliamentary election.‌

The result shocked voters and politicians, with the favorite party to win being pushed into third place by an opposing bloc of left-wing and centrist parties. The left-wing New Popular Front secured the most seats, with the centrist bloc including President Emmanuel Macron’s party achieving the second most number of seats.‌

Having run a campaign that lost his party 80 seats, and its plurality in parliament, Prime Minister Gabriel Attal felt forced to offer his resignation to the president. But the Elysee says Macron asked him to stay for the moment, citing the need for stability at a complex time from French politics, and with the Paris 2024 Olympic Games starting this month.

‌The unusual nature of the election result was largely down to an unprecedented degree of tactical voting. The prospect of a far-right party making into government after the first round of elections galvanized political parties from the far left to the center-right to work together to beat the far-right National Rally.

However, although it was pipped to the top spot, eventually coming third, it doubled the number of seats it had in parliament. ‌It is hoping to use that presence, and the extra funding it gets from securing so many seats, to help Marine Le Pen become president in 2027.

But while the cross-party voting successfully secured National Rally’s defeat, it created at least two political headaches that will cause problems for governance.‌

The first problem is that coalitions are not an ordinary part of French political culture – but with all three of the major blocs far from a majority of seats in Parliament, a coalition of some kind will have to be formed.‌

This is a difficult process, when as early as Monday politicians from across all ideological blocs were ruling out working with politicians from other politically opposed blocs.

‌The second problem is that French democracy is designed to work best when the prime minister and president are from the same party. Running a government where the two are representatives of different parties – known as a ‘cohabitation’ – will pose tricky challenges to come.

For example, while the French president is the ultimate decision maker when it comes to foreign policy and the military, it is the French prime minister who allocates the funding.

No wonder ‌French politicians expect it will take weeks, possibly months, for a cross-party government to be formed.

  • Jude Bellingham Euro 2024 in limbo as investigation starts

Jude Bellingham Euro 2024 in limbo as investigation starts

England midfielder Jude Bellingham Euro 2024 stint could be over after UEFA initiated an investigation over a gesture he made after scoring a late equaliser against Slovakia.

The Real Madrid star and former Birmingham City youngster appeared to gesture toward the Slovakian bench after his overhead kick brought England level in the dying seconds of injury time in Gelsenkirchen.

UEFA released a statement on Monday which said: “A UEFA ethics and disciplinary inspector will conduct a disciplinary investigation regarding a potential violation of the basic rules of decent conduct by the English Football Association player, Jude Bellingham, having allegedly occurred in the scope of this match.

“Information on this matter will be made available in due course.”

Bellingham posted on X about the gesture in the hours after the match, saying: “An inside joke gesture towards some close friends who were at the game. Nothing but respect for how that Slovakia team played tonight.”
