Nairobi, Kenya – January 8, 2026: In a landmark move to boost youth entrepreneurship, create jobs, and accelerate economic inclusion, the Government of Kenya has begun the nationwide rollout of the NYOTA Fund- a Sh125 billion youth empowerment initiative targeting vulnerable young entrepreneurs across 27 counties.
The National Youth Opportunities Towards Advancement (NYOTA) Project — financed by the World Bank and implemented by the State Department for Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) Development — aims to tackle youth unemployment, stimulate business growth, and promote sustainable livelihoods across the country.
What Is the NYOTA Fund?
The NYOTA Fund is a five-year youth empowerment programme designed to unlock the economic potential of Kenyan youth by providing:
- Business start-up capital
- Entrepreneurship training and mentorship
- Structured savings support
- Access to government opportunities and markets
The project emphasises entrepreneurship, financial inclusion, skills development, and job creation for young Kenyans aged 18–29 years (up to 35 years for Persons with Disabilities).
Sh125 Billion Disbursement: What Youth Will Receive
Under Phase Two of the programme, nearly 50,000 youth nationwide will receive business start-up capital over the coming weeks. Key benefits include:
- KSh 22,000 deposited into the Nyota Pochi la Biashara wallet
- KSh 3,000 automatically saved under the NSSF Haba na Haba savings account
- Two-month mentorship programme with expert business coaches
- Follow-up business development support to ensure sustainability and growth.
The disbursement schedule runs from January 8–16, 2026, with regional rollout events presided over by President William Ruto in key counties such as Uasin Gishu, Nakuru, Nyeri, Meru, Machakos, and Nairobi.
Nationwide Progress and Phased Rollout
The NYOTA Project was launched in August 2025, and its first phase successfully supported 12,155 youth in Western Kenya — with each recipient receiving about Sh25,000, including savings contributions.
Phase Two expands the initiative to 27 counties, covering major regions and empowering youth with business capital after completion of mandatory classroom business skills training.
A Phase Three rollout—covering coastal, northern, and additional counties such as Mombasa, Kilifi, Garissa, and Mandera—is expected to be announced later, unlocking opportunities for tens of thousands more young entrepreneurs.
Objectives: Beyond Cash Grants
The NYOTA Project goes beyond simple financial support. Its core mission is to:
1. Drive Youth Employment & Entrepreneurship
By empowering youth to launch or expand small businesses, the programme helps shift Kenya’s workforce from mere job seeking to job creation.
2. Promote Business Sustainability
Mentorship and continuous technical support ensure funds are used effectively — aligned with real business plans developed during training.
3. Build a Culture of Savings
Integration with the NSSF Haba na Haba savings platform encourages financial discipline and long-term stability among beneficiaries.
4. Strengthen Youth Access to Opportunities
Through digital empowerment and access to government procurement platforms (AGPO, e-tenders), NYOTA prepares youth to compete for broader economic opportunities.
