KYIV / BRUSSELS -January 9, 2026- Russia launched a powerful hypersonic Oreshnik missile overnight at a target in western Ukraine close to the European Union and NATO border, in what Kyiv and its Western allies have condemned as a “grave escalation” and deliberate attempt to intimidate Europe and derail peace negotiations.
The strike, only the second known use of the Oreshnik hypersonic missile in the Russo-Ukrainian conflict, occurred amid a broad overnight assault involving 36 missiles and 242 drones, striking infrastructure in the Lviv region and around Kyiv. Ukrainian officials reported at least four civilian deaths, widespread power outages affecting more than half a million residents, and damage to the Qatari Embassy in Kyiv.
Hypersonic Missile Strike Close to EU & NATO Territory

According to Ukrainian authorities, the Oreshnik, a new intermediate-range ballistic missile capable of speeds exceeding Mach 10 and carrying multiple warheads, struck near the Lviv area, close to the borders with Poland and other EU states. The Russian defense ministry claimed the attack was a response to an alleged Ukrainian drone strike on one of President Vladimir Putin’s residences, a claim Kyiv and U.S. officials have firmly denied.
The missile reportedly carried inert or dummy warheads in previous tests, but its deployment in this strike has heightened fears due to its nuclear-capable design and perceived role as a tool of strategic intimidation.
International Outrage and Escalated Tensions
European Union leaders swiftly denounced the attack. EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas described Russia’s use of the hypersonic weapon as a “clear escalation” and a direct challenge to European security. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, alongside counterparts from the U.K. and France, reiterated support for Ukraine and pledged deeper cooperation on air defense and sanctions.
Ukraine’s foreign ministry labeled the launch “a grave threat to continental security,” emphasizing that such “dangerous acts” near EU and NATO borders could force a recalibration of Western military and diplomatic support.
Impact on Kyiv and Broader Conflict Dynamics

The assault on Kyiv and surrounding regions crippled vital utilities during harsh winter conditions, leaving thousands without heat and water amid sub-zero temperatures. Emergency crews reported significant challenges in responding to simultaneous drone and missile strikes.
The latest offensive comes during a sensitive phase of peace negotiations in Paris, prompting Western capitals to consider additional military support and deterrence measures, including conditional troop deployments should a ceasefire be reached. Moscow has criticized such proposals, warning they could further escalate hostilities.
